Since it opened in 1912 Hotel Maria Cristina a Luxury Collection Hotel has been intimately linked to the history and cultural life of San Sebastian. In the late 19th century the seaside town on the southern point of the Bay of Biscay became a favorite destination for royalty and aristocrats who came to enjoy the sunshine and newly recognized therapeutic properties of sea bathing. A traditional afternoon stroll along the boardwalk offered an opportunity to see and be seen while the many cafes and open air terraces were filled with high society. San Sebastian had passed from being a sleepy fishing village into a thriving cosmopolitan town requiring luxurious, modern facilities to meet the demands of its discerning guests. The hotel is elegantly decorated with luxury reflecting at every corner. Great location, good service, fabulous rooms and friendly staff fuses together to give you an experience. The newly renovated hotel is done beautifully with beautiful chandeliers, rich brocades and 19th-Century portraits.
A sophisticated pallet of colours grace the very spacious rooms, which is loved by guests. Travellers loved the big size of bed and luxurious beddings, making sleep-time a wonderful experience and stay memorable. Fantastic views of river and city are another feather to the cap.
The well-trained staff ensures that excellent service is provided to guests. The staff has an eye-for-detail and very attentive to guests needs. From helping with quick check-in to providing beach towels to beach-bound guests, the staff proves that hotel is customer-centric.
Some guests felt that being a 5-star property, Maria Cristina could have added swimming pool and spa in its premises. Guests are surprised with the absence of indoor pool, however the close proximity to beaches more than makes up for it.
Though most of the guests loved the free Wi-Fi, connectivity was not very good. Staying connected is an issue and it is a little annoying to connect to Wi-Fi time and again.
A few minor issues reported by guests include lack of information regarding facilities, absence of door between bath and toilet and thin walls. However, such issues did not affect the otherwise memorable stay at hotel which compels guests to come back again.
